Artemis Fowl is the first book of the series, meaning that every character is new: Artemis and company are shown both as the bad guys and the good guys, same as the Fairies. It's got both points of view, showing that not even the bad guy is that bad.
During the book the entire kidnapping and posterior rescuing of a female Underground Police Elements member is told. Artemis is usually two steps ahead of anybody else, which makes the story much more interesting. The characters are perfectly defined, and all of them have a nice , really amusing, sarcasm in their dialogues, making them more real and easy-to-believe in, even when they're magical people who live underground and have technology a few times better than human. Excellent book, really worth reading.
